Welcome to our latest Design Insights interview! In this edition, we welcome Marij Hessel, from refurbishing and styling blog Enter My Attic. Let’s get started!
Describe your design style in 5 words or less.
Colorful, vintage, greens, eclectic and DIY.
With the Pantone Colour Institute announcing ‘greenery’ as its ‘Colour of the Year 2017’, what tips can you give us to add a splash of green into your home?
I’m all about adding green to my home with lots of plants! I just can’t get enough of all the different kinds of shapes and structures that plants have. They really are perfect for styling your home! Plants actually make me happy and my home would be incomplete without them. I think you can add living greens to every room in your house if you like, but adding them to your home office is a must! It gives you a sense of nature and they’re very healthy! Make groups of different shapes and sizes and combine modern with vintage plant pots! You can easily upcycle a terracotta plant pot with some tape and some paint!
People often say ‘green’ reconnects them with nature and has soothing qualities, what’s your take on this?
I agree completely! In this digital world, we spend a lot of time inside an office or behind the computer. For me, adding plants to my workspace and through the rest of my home, gives me a feeling of being connected to nature in some way. It’s kind of like having a pet, you have to take care of them and give them some love… But most of the time they’re much easier to take care of 😉
Our newIcon range of pedal bins includes some fab new colours, do you like your homewares to blend in, or take centre stage?
I really love the colours of the newIcon range! I think homewares can take centre stage, as long as they’re pretty to look at! In this case, the pedal bin I picked out is very well designed. The colour, Moss Green, sort of blends in with the rest of my interior so it’s a perfect match!
We love our planet as much as you do. That’s why we’ve really stepped up our green game to help rid the world’s oceans of plastic, thanks to our newIcon pedal bins. Are you more inspired to buy a product if you know it’s helping a good cause?
For sure. It really gives a product extra value if it’s durable and helping a good cause. That’s why I love collecting vintage so much, it is all about recycling and giving things a second life! I think more and more people are getting aware nowadays of what they buy, wear and eat. I think we have a long way to go but every little step is helping the world to get a better place!
Any top tips on how to reuse or upcycle products to give them a new lease of life?
I think vintage or re-used items make your home much more personal. Often a fresh layer of paint can do a lot for an old piece of furniture! By refurbishing an old chair with a modern print or fabric, you can create a surprising new look as well. You have to imagine the new layer of paint or fabric when you’re shopping for vintage because otherwise, you’ll just see a lot of old stuff standing next to each other!
What inspires you today?
I get inspired by travelling, seeing interiors of shops, B&Bs & restaurants in other countries always gets me excited. Off course I get inspired by blogs, Instagram accounts, Pinterest and magazines… As long as it’s original and authentic. I love it when a personality is reflected in the interior of the person who lives there and when someone creates their own personal style instead of following the mainstream trends. Thrift shopping always gets me inspired as well.
Goals for 2017 you’d like to share?
In 2017, I started working for myself and I’m still finding out to be an entrepreneur! My main goal is to follow my passion and love for interior styling and to work as a freelancer combined with running my blog and webshop in vintage furniture and accessories. This is what makes me happy and I hope I can make a nice living out of it in the future!
