Colourful, eclectic mix of vintage.
With the Pantone Colour Institute announcing ‘greenery’ as its ‘Colour of the Year 2017’, what tips can you give us to add a splash of green into your home?
I love the colour combination of green and pink, that other colour that’s pretty hot right now! And there’s, of course, the literal green you can add to your interior plants. I’m a huge plant and garden lover. I’ve always had plants in my home. A beautiful bouquet of flowers immediately add a sort of liveliness and above all colour to your home.
People often say ‘green’ reconnects them with nature and has soothing qualities, what’s your take on this?
Green is my favourite colour so I can totally relate to that. Sometimes I stray off to yellow, pink, smalt blue or burgundy but eventually, I always return to some shade of green. Whether it is mint green or dark green, green is always a good idea. I guess it is soothing indeed! When I was pregnant with our daughter, we painted one wall in her room mint green. We didn’t want the room to look too girly-girly, but we did want it to feel like a child’s room. We (and she) still love it up until this day. It’s surprising (or maybe not) how many colours perfectly combine with green.
Our newIcon range of pedal bins includes some fab new colours, do you like your homewares to blend in, or take centre stage?
I really love colour and I can’t imagine a home in just one or two shades. I want colours to take a stage, but on a white canvas to keep a certain balance and calm between them. We are the happy owners of a newIcon in Daisy Yellow, a beautiful statement in our overall white kitchen.
We love our planet as much as you do. That’s why we’ve really stepped up our green game to help rid the world’s oceans of plastic, thanks to our newIcon pedal bins. Are you more inspired to buy a product if you know it’s helping a good cause?
One loud wholehearted yes to that. Saving our planet for generations to come should be our number one priority. It’s a shame that certain people don’t see it that way.
Any top tips on how to reuse or upcycle products to give them a new lease of life?
I recently visited a fabulous and hopeful project here in The Netherlands, called Blue City. It’s located in an old, abandoned subtropical swimming pool in Rotterdam. They experiment with a circular way of waste disposal instead of a linear one. In other words: all the waste the small business owners produce in that building is reused. However, it’s hard to do that at home. I think every small step towards saving and recycling stuff is an important one. We bring our own bag to the grocery store and even if it rains cats and dogs I take my bicycle instead of the car, for instance. Visiting thrift shops are my favourite pastime and I think that’s one of the best places to go if you want to recycle or reuse stuff in a fun way. 70% of our interior is second hand and the good thing is: if we need to clear out, we bring items back to those second-hand stores where they will be sold again (preferably for charity).

Goals for 2017 you’d like to share?
Last February a big dream came true when I was asked to become a columnist for one of The Netherland’s largest newspapers. I write a weekly column about the vintage interior, a topic I really really love. Writing has always been a great love of mine, next to styling with vintage. There are a lot of great and exciting projects coming my way currently. I feel truly blessed that I’m allowed to work with so many great people and to be able to make a living doing what I love to do most. I work entirely from home, so no polluting car trips to work for me! It’s one of the many perks of working as a freelancer.
Our environmental goal is to teach our daughter to love and respect our planet and all its inhabitants. But that’s not just a goal for 2017, but for years to come!
