In this week’s Design Insights Interview we are truly excited to feature the ‘Queen of prints’ – Irish designer Orla Kiely. Known for her retro-inspired lifestyle collection – which includes everything from ready-to-wear clothes to furniture – Kiely has teamed up with us here at Brabantia to design a print for our Retro Bin.
You’ll no doubt have seen the launch coverage from London’s Tower Bridge a few weeks ago, but now we get a unique opportunity to speak to Orla herself to find out her views on the exciting collaboration!
Your world-famous stem design has now taken root on Brabantia’s Retro Bin, how did the collaboration with Brabantia come about? I’ve been a fan of Brabantia products for several years. The level of craftsmanship and functionality of the products have always captured my imagination. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with them, it’s a perfect collaboration. I wanted to add some colour and fun to an essential object that we use every day.
How did you feel when you saw the 3 metre high bin installation at Tower Bridge? It was so striking and wonderful to see both the colourways represented in such a creative and eye-catching way. It created a huge stir in the blogosphere and top interiors bloggers are really supporting this new collaboration. The engagement of fans and love for the collaboration really shows online. It’s always rewarding to see the views of our consumers and know that we have created a collection that fits their style.
Which room in your home/office now features the Orla Kiely Brabantia Retro Bin? It takes pride of place in our office, where all visitors and staff can enjoy it!
What’s your most cherished interiors possession and why? My son’s art pictures are very special to me. He has a wonderful eye for detail. I also have some Old Memphis pieces which remind me of my early years at Esprit.
Which colour combinations do you enjoy working with right now and why? For my AW15, I kept the colour palette quite calm – pale yellow with pastel blue and mustard yellow with grey. There was quite a bit of pink in the collection too, but I offset the pink with a darker orange – colour can change the entire mood of a collection – its important to find the right balance but to not be afraid of doing something bold!
What can we expect from Orla in 2015? It’s almost been 20 years since I founded the brand – I can’t believe it! There will be a lot of celebrating to do. We have recently partnered with Fujitsu in Japan and will be opening a flagship over there, which is very exciting. We’ve started a scholarship programme to fund a student’s textile studies at the Royal College of Art. It’s great to be able to help the next generation of designers – the chosen student will also intern at our head office next summer. Also, Orla Kiely Time launched at the Basil World Watch Fair. It is very Retro and was well received. Watch out in September when they will be ready to buy.
Thanks so much to Orla for sharing her creative world with us! To buy the collection head to our webshop.
