In this week’s edition of our inspirational design insights interview, we are pleased to welcome French Interior Designer, Decorator and Blogger Marie-Laure from Le blog déco de mlc! Let’s gain an insight into her world, and what it’s like to run her interior design company Les ateliers de mlc:
What do you love most about your job as an interior designer/architect and blogger? They work together and are complementary. I would feel incomplete without one or the other. Blogging enables me to share and discuss what I find and see as well as talk about the household world and decoration. My job as a decorator and interior architect enables me to create and decorate spaces for people who visit, work or live in these places.
Describe your interior style… Hearty, uncluttered and full of contrasts. We enter the home in a peaceful space where we become slowly aware of the richness of details that respond to each other.
Let’s talk interior trends! Which are you lusting over this season? I really like the tropical trend. I like playing with plants (real or stylised) in a decor, and a mix of clear/or dark wooden furniture with bold colours and pastels. With this style and mood, we smile right away. It’s exotic, peaceful and refreshing.
Which chic colour combinations are you completely obsessed with? One combination that I really like is tropical mood colours – black, green and wooden hues or white, green and wood. The second combination I like is royal blue, salmon pink and white – this is influenced by the graphic world.
Three objects that can completely refresh a room are… With no hesitation, a carpet, a lamp and a trendy piece of furniture (like a jewel).
Top secret design tip? I would bet the 80’s being the next trend after the 50’s and the Nordic style.
A recent design discovery you adore is… Bikes. I didn’t care about them before. But they are now more and more beautifully designed and I have begun to collect bike pictures. I’ll need to get back on it!
My current design crushes are… I like all classical design from vintage, Saarin, Eames, Guariche, India Madhavi & Hubert Legall and new names such as Hartô, Petite Friture, & tradition, Pinch…
I keep my creativity alive by…. Embracing nature and plants, seascape and dance are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me.
What’s your most cherished interiors possession? I have a tree, a weeping willow that is all dry now, which can be used as a vegetal sculpture that I can accessorise with foliage, flowers or butterflies to create all sorts and multicolour.
Describe your dream home… A house I could re-create, re-decorate, re-paint to infinity by pushing a button as soon as I have a new idea. It would be very nice…
What does the future look like for you? I would like animated walls like the one from ‘Espace Team Lab’ presented at the last Maison et Objets fair. I did a small video about this which is published on my blog.
Have you seen our latest inspirational LookBook? Which item is on your must-have wish list? Of course I read it and it’s great! I must say that many articles are on my wish list: the kitchen scales and kitchen accessories, the bins, and the laundry bag with its quick-drop opening in pink.
What’s going to be hot for 2015? The warm metal of copper is still present and is becoming more and more important. Geometrical patterns or geometrical forms as objects, either suspended or sometimes extruded will be on trend. As well as new couch/sofa designs which are more rounded and dismantled.
