It’s time for our brand new Design Insights Interview! This week we are pleased to welcome Isabelle from inspirational interior blog La Minute Déco. A former deco journalist for over 15 years, Isabelle created the blog to show the world everything she loves, from interior inspiration and decorating ideas to the hottest colours and styles. Lets gain an insight inter her world:
What inspired you to delve into interior design and how did you get started? For a long time I worked as a decoration journalist, first in traditional press and then on the internet. This was pleasant as well as frustrating. I wanted to write ‘for myself’ and use a personal tone, so 3 years ago, once I overcame the blogging technical apprehensions, I started La Minute Déco.
How would you describe your interior style? My interior style has been influenced by the apartment, really contemporary and urban. There are numerous plate glass windows that provide a whole view of Paris. The most important thing was for the decoration to not take attention away from the panorama views, but for it to be noticeable. There is a lot of white and glossy materials with a touch of bright colours to give some heat to the overall look.
Which room in the home do you enjoy designing and styling the most and why? It’s obviously the living room, or rather the living area. It’s a really big living/dining room/open kitchen/office, and it’s bright and really comfortable. It’s the room where I spend the most of my time as I work in there.
Which trend are you most excited about working with this year? This year, I love the ‘copper’ trend. I find that copper accessories bring a nice pep’s touch to interiors. They are also well suited for industrial interiors or a classical and natural ambiance.
Which colour combinations do you prefer? I like ‘hot’ colours. Red, cardinal red, burgundy, orange. I particularly love to mix these hues with chocolate or duck blue colours.
Where do you seek style inspiration? Everywhere! In stores, magazines, web, Pinterest, press releases… Thanks to my journalist background, I’m always seeking new trends and new objects.
What materials do you like to focus on? I like velvet, in fact I love velvet! I think that my next sofa will be in this material. I love the softness and its elegant side but also that it’s easy to live with and it feels warm. I also like wood, especially on the floor. Nothing is more beautiful than a nice parquet with wide plank which will patinate with time to gain character and nobleness.
Which 3 objects do you believe have the ability to completely transform a room? A lamp, a mirror and a sofa. I have long sought the perfect lighting for my apartment. This object, is for me, one of the most important in decoration. A lamp can be a nice looking object and its light can totally modify the space. It can enlarge it, catch the eye on a specific detail, or on the contrary, turn it as a flaw.
A mirror can also modify a space and enlarge it if space is limited. An old model with a nice frame, always gives a noble touch to the decoration. My last preferred item would be the sofa. Of course voluminous and imposing, the sofa is the masterpiece of the living room. It gives the right tone for the staging and is the object that can direct the colour and material choice in the room.
What advice would you give to our readers looking to refresh their interiors? Seek, snoop, look, compare… through passing time, we sharpen our tastes and we finally find what we are looking for. It’s preferable to take time than to fall for the latest fashion trend with the risk of being bored quickly. It’s important to understand that it’s not necessary to change everything in decoration to change the ambiance. Add a new light, a coloured wall or a new sofa and voila!
Do you have any upcoming exciting projects? Oh yes! We just purchased a house in Normandie, a nice little manor with lots of timber. As soon as the big works will be realised (electric fittings etc), we will give free reign to our desire to decor. We dream of a ‘country’ interior, in contrast to our urban Parisian apartment. A huge part of 2015 will be dedicated to this project.
