We start our week with a dash of creative inspiration! Introducing this week’s Design Insights Interview with Femkeido Interior Design from the Netherlands. Let’s hear from Femke Dekker, we can’t wait to have an insight into her world:
What inspired you to delve into interior styling and how did you get started?
Now I know that it is in my blood. My love for interior decorating and styling is something what was always there but when I was younger I thought that every kid wanted to change their room ALL the time. Anyway, it was obviously there. Unfortunately I didn’t choose to study to become an Interior Designer, so I worked for 10 years in HR before changing my career to do what I really want to do. Nowadays I am lucky enough to make a full time living out of it
How would you describe your interior style?
I like design and colour. Together it evolves into a bright, somewhat eclectic style
Of all the projects you have styled, which has been your favorite?
Oh that’s difficult.. I think that must be my first design I did for Home Decor programme “Eigen Huis & Tuin” That was very exciting ofcourse and the home owners were flabbergasted
Which room in the home do you enjoy styling the most and why?
Never really thought about that, I don’t think I really have a favourite room. Any type of room has its own challenges
Which trend are you most excited about working with this year?
The jungle trend. I love green and plants, so for me that all comes together
Which colour combinations are your favourite to work with?
A plain basis is really important for me. If I look at my last projects, I see a lot of green, blue and some pink
Where do you seek style inspiration?
Everywhere by looking at small things. But also inspiration boosts I get from traveling to cities such as New York, London and Miami
What are your favourite materials to work with?
Fabric and wallpaper, without a doubt
Which 3 objects do you believe have the ability to completely transform a room?
Paint/ wallpaper, a rug and good lighting
What advice would you give to our readers looking to refresh their interiors?
Make a moodboard of anything you like. You will discover your style by doing this. Then make a floorplan without drawing your furniture in it just yet, start looking at the space in a different way. You will definately get other ideas on placing your furniture in a different way. Good luck!
Do you have any upcoming exciting projects?
Yes! The preparation of the new tv season will start soon, so cool things are coming up there. But I am also starting 2 big projects for houses (one in the Hague and one in Delft) where I will be doing everything, from designing the floorplans to decorating
