Singing the blues in 2014 – interior design colour trends for the year ahead

Brabantia Mineral Blue It’s official! Blue is set to be one of the key colour for interior designers in 2014. Whether it’s subtle and understated or big and bold, leading lights in interior design are all looking for ways to incorporate shades of blue in their new schemes.

Will Taylor of Bright Bazaar predicts blues will be the essential colour palette for 2014, as they are “becoming more and more popular as a ‘neutral’ alternative” and that “more people are gravitating towards pale blue-green hues for their base palettes.”

While it might be beautiful as the new neutral, Will shows you can also make some real noise and have fun with blue. We love his post on ‘three ways to a statement staircase using blue.’

Interior designer Melanie Langford agrees that blue is going to be big news in 2014. She says Teal Blue will be a popular choice as it’s easy to combine with most other colours. “Update this look by pairing it with the still popular spa blue,” is Melanie’s top tip.

The team at Architizer also predict blue will be the hot colour next year. Their reason for the colour’s dominance in interiors:  “It’s the color of trust – which during a time of economic and social unrest makes it an especially attractive hue. As with past years, shades of blue-green (teal, turquoise) are growing in popularity, but expect to see more monochromatic schemes of mid-tone blues.”

Carmen Natschke, otherwise known as the Decorating Diva, sees the classic combination of blue and white as being a key look for interiors in 2014, takings its inspiration from inspired by ceramics, porcelain, and mosaics from China, Holland, Portugal, and Japan. Check out her Pinterest board for some simply stunning ideas.

Expect to see this blue bias in the fashion world as well, following Pantone’s announcement that Dazzling Blue  is its Colour of the Year for 2014. According to Racked, the reason for choosing Dazzling Blue is that it’s already so popular with women and therefore practical; people already have a form of the shade in their closets.
