This month we launched a new competition for designers to create a successor to our iconic Patrice design. The ‘Pimp Our Print’ competition is open to all budding designers across the globe regardless of age, experience or location.
As well as the chance for their print and name to appear on a range of Brabantia canisters, and potentially a whole product range including Bread Bins, Touch Bins and Pedal Bins, the winner will also receive a three day trip for two with tickets to Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2014 in Milan, luxury hotel accommodation, transport and spending money for this trip of a lifetime (11-13 April 2014).
So, to help inspire you, we’ve caught up with the winner from last year’s design competition (Design Your Bin) Dominic Marshall to see how winning the competition has changed his life:
How does it feel one year on from winning Design Your Bin?
It feels good I’ve had a lot of positive reaction and pr from winning the competition. Not sure that being known as ‘the Bin Man’ is great though!
What was your proudest moment after winning the competition?
To be honest I could have done without the cheesy photo in our local paper, but it got me noticed by the lollipop man! Note from editor: We love this picture! Seriously though, having worked anonymously for loads of brands over the years it was nice to see my name associated with a commercial success. Something that I hope to do more of.
What’s been the biggest change in your professional life since winning the competition?
I’ve continued to work for regular clients like M&S, Next, Denby & Antler, but, encouraged by the success of the bin I have found time to create some designs of my own which hopefully will be available to buy soon.
Is there any big news you can share with us since winning?
I have designed a range of iPhone, iPad, galaxy and kindle covers for an American company called Kekacase. These are available in the states and will be on Amazon in the UK from next month. I am also hoping to have a range of my own mugs out early next year.
Are you going to enter the Pimp Our Print competition this year?
I have already entered under an alias. Joking! I have sneaked one in but I’m not really expecting to win again. It’s a pretty cool design though so you never know.
What would you say to anyone who might be considering entering the PoP competition but has not got around to it yet?
Have a look in your bottom drawer and see if there is something in there that you can revisit or rethink or that might just provide a starting point for a winning design. You’ve got to be in it to win it. Honestly, I’d only ever won a beautiful baby competition before this, and that was 40 odd years ago, so you never know.
And we always have to ask… what Brabantia product would you never be without?!
The Pop Kitchen Bin of course. Although I have to say I’ve never used it. It’s too precious.
For a chance to see your design go global like Dominic’s enter our Pimp Our Print competition today! Good luck!
