Last month we announced the international winner of our Iron in Style competition and today the team at Brabantialife caught up with Gerda Elzenaar from the Netherlands who was named the overall international winner.  She won a prize package of Brabantia products worth £1,500 and the satisfaction of seeing her winning spring-fresh blossom design go into production.

The challenge set to designers, domestic goddesses or just those wanting to experiment in some creativity, was to design a fun cover for a Brabantia ironing table and we invited the public to vote for their favourite design.

Here Gerda explains what inspired her design:

– What was the inspiration behind your winning design?

The smell of clean laundry inspired me to a painting of a cherry blossom. Dry your laundry springfresh! Was the idea behind my design of shapes and colours.

– How do you feel about winning the competition?

I find it fantastic that I won! Especially to see my design reflected in the shops. And it’s an opportunity because I am busy with starting my own business in styling and design.

– What did you like most about your winning design?

Painting is one of my hobbies…Flowers are my inspiration for many of my designs. The shape and colour of flowers in general I find very beautiful. I love fresh, bright colours that’s what I also like about my iron in style design.

– And, we’d love to know…what’s your favourite Brabantia product and why?

The touch bin. Beautiful, sleek and timeless design that suits our interior and it’s easy to use.

– Are there any trends/styles/looks that you are enjoying at the moment?

Colour blocking, fresh bright colours and combinations of all pink colours. Fuchsia is one of my favourite colours that I am using most of the time in my designs.

– Are there any particular artists that inspire you?

Pip Studio, Oilily and Blond Amsterdam – because of all the bright colour combination and the somewhat busy and cheerful look of their designs.
